Greener IT departments may be the outcome of a change in attitudes over the coming months after fears of the growing threats from the current economic climate.
This trend, however, is unintentional as it is not a matter of social conscience but cost-cutting initiatives such as software asset management which are powering the eco-awareness, according to the National Computing Centre (NCC).
Michael Dean, the group marketing manager at the NCC, said companies would be more intensively reviewing the use of hardware and whether or not software licences needed to be renewed, cutting down on any unnecessary cost.
"It is highly likely that many organisations will be able to identify underutilised assets and reduce their IT overheads. Whilst this isn't a green motive, it will have a positive effect," he concluded.
Kyocera's 2008 Environmental Office Research report found that 57 per cent of businesses have an environmental policy in action, with another 68 per cent having eco-conscious measures within the workplace.
