Data 'vulnerable' due to 'lax corporate security'

Basic security errors and "slack management" are the two major reasons why so many companies and organisations have been subjected to data leaks, it has been stated.

Laura Shannon of the Metro said that although some data leaks may be impossible to avoid, companies should be able to prove to the public - who are made well aware of the incident - that they did all that they could to prevent it from happening beforehand.

She asserted: "Small and medium-sized enterprises must be just as responsible as large corporations in ensuring that the personal details of staff, clients and customers are treated with confidentiality."

Ms Shannon highlighted results from a poll made by Companies House which receives between 50 and 100 reported cases of corporate identity fraud each month, emphasising the need for proactive steps to avoid this happening instead of "keeping your head low and praying".

About.com's James Marshall said that email attachments were a particular worry for companies as there was a high chance they contain viruses which could bring systems down.
